Riva Tarnopolsky began her martial arts training in 1977 and has over 35 years of teaching experience. After 7 ½ years in the art, she had relocated and trained at two other dojos (schools). Returning home after 5 years and training under her original traditional instructor, Chuck Kerrigan, she ultimately earned her Sho Dan (1st Degree) in Shotokan under Osamu Ozawa, one of the original founders of the Japan Karate Association (JKA) and earned her San Dan (3rd Degree) through the American Shotokan Karate Alliance (ASKA), testing under Sensei Randall Hassell.
As a certified Instructor with the American Shotokan Karate Alliance, Riva has taken numerous instructors training courses as well as attended seminars on instructing children with special needs.
Riva taught children, youth and adult classes at the Traditional Karate Do Family Training Center and was responsible for the advancement of the 5 – 12 year old age group and all beginning students. In addition she has students at the Upper St. Clair Community Center and conducts self-defense classes.
Riva is has been certified as a Group Fitness Instructor and as a Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise.
